About the Author

Thomas Hempfling obtained his Ph.D. in mathematics at Erlangen university in 1997 followed by a few years of research activities until he decided in 2001 to accept a position as Mathematics Editor at Birkhäuser Verlag in Basel, Switzerland, a daughter company of Springer at the time. He soon became team lead of Science Editorial and member of the Extended Management Team at Birkhäuser, and from 2010 served for 10 years as Managing Director of the Basel office. Since 2010 he is Editorial Director for Mathematics at Springer, including the Birkhäuser team and has recently also taken on the Statistics group. His team focuses on books, working out of offices in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
