Technology changes society and environment since the onset of industrialization. Springer Engineering books accompany technological progress for about 170 years, with early authors such as Werner von Siemens and Rudolf Diesel. The huge and comprehensive Engineering eBook collection continues this tradition.
Its contemporary scope not only represents the entire classical areas of Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil Engineering in their widest sense. Much of its content reports the interdisciplinary applications between these areas and beyond their boundaries, as driven by the newest research results and innovations, e.g. in Communications, Biology and Medicine, or even Social Sciences. The collection caters to students by its rich set of textbooks, matching the diverse curricula of the different Engineering disciplines. Artificial Intelligence became an enabling technology for Engineering applications comparable to Computational (Numerical) methods. Hence, it can be found in many of the new Engineering books without even being mentioned in the title.
The 2024 collection displays a large diversity in all classical Engineering fields as well as new one like Cyper-physical Systems, represented by the “Springer Handbook of Internet of Things” or Quantum Technologies, as in the second edition of the textbook “Introduction to Quantum Computing”. There is a focus on Mechanics textbooks, often new editions, e.g. “Fluid Mechanics for Mechanical Engineers” or “Thermal Stresses in Plates and Shells”. Sustainability and Energy are topics that emerge in much of the collection as well, such as in “Sustainable Engineering”. The strong Springer tradition in Engineering design is perpetuated by “The Design and Development Process”. Other significant clusters in 2024 are on Marine Engineering and Navigation, e.g. “Essentials of Navigation” and Bioengineering, e.g. "Significant and Nonsignificant Risk Medical Devices".
I would also like to mention “Lighting Technology” a book for students and practitioners, as well as the deep insights provided by “China’s e-Science Blue Book 2023” of the Chinese Acaademy of Science and other relevant government institutions.

Dieter Merkle, Vice President, graduated with a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from TU Darmstadt. He then joined Springer in 1991 as a Publishing Editor for German Professional books. In the following decade, he contributed substantially to the internationalization of the Springer Engineering program and eventually took responsibility for the Engineering editorial team as Editorial Director. The launch of eBooks in the mid-2000s expanded both the quantity and the scope of his list. Hence his current remit is Applied Sciences. If you would like to find out more about licensing the Engineering eBook Collection, contact your Licensing Manager.
